Nuke Keying Masterclass

Pull keys that keep fine hair, clean edges and true colour, the way studios do it.

  • Status: Recording
  • Software: Nuke 14+
  • TH / EN

This course is being recorded. The plan is a working compositor’s keying method: split the key into layers, handle spill and edges, then sit the result into the new plate. Tap notify and you get one email when it opens.

What it plans to cover

  • IBK and splitting the key into core, edge and hair
  • Despill that keeps skin tones right
  • Dark edges, glowing edges and light wrap
  • Hard plates: uneven screens, motion blur, LED volumes

This is the plan; it may change during recording.

Try one question first

An orange shape merged over sky three ways. Which one is premultiplied correctly?

Beliefs this course corrects

A key is a mask, so more contrast is always better?

Truth: Crushing a key to pure black and white eats soft edges like hair and motion blur. Keep a soft key for the edge, a separate hard core key inside, and combine them with max.

Any grade works fine on a premultiplied image?

Truth: Only pure multiplies are safe on premultiplied images. Lift, gamma and offset need unpremult → grade → premult, or the edges go wrong.
